A

Accounting System - Accounting Information System (AIS) is an on-line, menu-driven mainframe application system meeting the accounts payable needs.

Application Midrange Servers - These servers can be used for hosting the custom applications created by the individual agencies in order to run their day to day operations. 

Application Support Services - Services that provide agency users with a single common point of contact to obtain assistance in the use of BCCS Common Systems and Enabling Applications. 

Audio Conferencing - Audio Conferencing allows three or more telephone participants to be connected via a conference bridge to enable a multi-party conversation.

Audiocast - The Audiocast offering provides the ability to broadcast simultaneous audio and presentation materials to audiences in real-time and on-demand formats.

Availability - The ability of a component or service to perform its required function at a stated instant or over a stated period of time.  It is usually expressed as an availability ratio.

Batch Services - These are services for submitting batch jobs to a mainframe for processing.  These services include MVS/JCS Services, MVS/TSO Services, and RJE Services.

Best Practices - An optimal set of procedures and functional principles typically derived from previous experience. When followed, best practices generally result in improved results, enhanced work flow, and other benefits in completing project activities.

Build - The final stage of producing a usable configuration. The process involves taking one or more input Configuration Items and processing them (building them) to create one or more output Configuration Items e.g. software compile and load.

Change - (Noun) Any new IT component deliberately introduced to the IT environment that may affect an IT service level or that otherwise affects the functioning of the environment or one of its components. (Verb) The addition, modification, or removal of approved, supported, or baselined hardware, network, software, application, environment, system, desktop build or associated documentation.

Change Management - The goal of change management is to ensure that standardization methods and procedures are used for efficient and prompt handling of all changes, in order to minimize the impact of change related incidents upon service quality, and consequently to improve the day-to-day operations of the organization.

Collaboration - Collaboration service offerings are web-based and offer anywhere, anytime access over the internet.  

Collaboration Midrange Servers - These servers can be used for hosting the collaboration web applications used by the agencies.  

Common Systems - Systems that support and enable support processes common across state agencies; including accounting, inventory, payroll, benefits, and timekeeping.

Communication Services - Services that provide secure and reliable communication channels and networking components required to deliver all forms of electronic communication within and between state facilities and between the state and its citizens; formats include data, voice, and video.

Configuration Item (CI) - Any IT component that is to be under the control of Configuration Management. CIs may vary widely in complexity, size, and type. They can range from an entire system (including all hardware, software and documentation) to a single module or a minor hardware component.

Database Midrange Servers - These servers can be used for hosting the databases used by the agencies. 

Database Services - These are mainframe database technologies which include DB2 Services, IDMS Services, and IMS Services.

Datacast - This offering provides the ability for audiences to view preloaded PowerPoint presentation materials in real-time and on-demand formats.

Enabling Applications - Applications that support state agencies in helping to promote the efficient and effective sharing of information across the state; including email, web collaboration, and document management.

End User Device Services - These services provide for the procurement, installation, configuration, and support of computing equipment used directly by state personnel.  These devices can include desktop and laptop PCs, various printing, scanning, and other peripheral devices, as well as mobile computing devices such as PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants). 

Event - An occurrence within the IT environment (usually a fault or incident) detected by a monitoring tool or an application that is consistent with predefined threshold values (within, exceeding, or falling below). An event is deemed to require some sort of response or, at a minimum, is worth recording for future consideration.

Hosting Services - Services that provides agencies with a variety of secure and reliable technology platforms on which to run their own unique mission-enabling systems and application software; including midrange and mainframe.

Imaging - Imaging services provide the capabilities to scan, import, store, secure, index, retrieve and route document-based information.

Incident - Any event that deviates from the (expected) standard operation of a system. Such an event influences the system, even though the influence may be small or even invisible to the user of the system. Every incident is assigned to a problem or a known error.

Inventory System - Central Inventory System (CIS) is a common system supporting the inventory process of tagging and tracking equipment, furniture, and vehicles.

ISO 17799 - An internationally recognized standard comprised of a comprehensive set of controls embracing best practices in information security published and sponsored by the International Standards Organization.

IT Infrastructure - The sum of an organization's IT-related hardware, software, data communication facilities, procedures, automation tools, documentation and people.

IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) - A framework of "best practice" guidance for IT Service Management

IT Service Provider - Any organizational units, whether internal or external, that deliver IT services to a customer as well as offer support.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) - A defined set of metrics used to describe the efficiency and/or effectiveness of a process or tool.

LAN - Wired - LAN Access connectivity that supports the direct connection of a workstation to the local office network.

LAN - Wireless - Wireless LAN Access connectivity that supports the wireless connection of a workstation or mobile device to the local office network.

Mainframe Processing - Mainframe Processing provides for the use of shared mainframe processing resources to run customer application components.

Mainframe Storage - Mainframe Storage provides a variety of storage types to most efficiently meet the data storage and retrieval needed to support application software running on the mainframe platform.  

Management Escalation - The process of raising the profile and awareness of an incident up the management hierarchy, to keep managers updated and obtain the necessary commitment and authority for the required support resources.

Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) - The average elapsed time between the full restoration of an IT service or supporting component and the next occurrence of a failure to the same service or component.

Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) - The average elapsed time from the occurrence of an incident to resolution of the incident.

Network Administration - It employs the process of maintaining communications systems and links, along with accompanying data-processing procedures, in accordance with the requirements and preconditions arising from their use and the characteristics of the network components. It is responsible for the efficient operation of the network at all times and for providing a reliable, consistent, scalable network infrastructure that meets or exceeds service levels and optimizes enterprise assets.

Network Operating System - An operating system that includes software to communicate with other computers by means of a network. This allows such resources as files, application programs, and printers to be shared between computers.

Online Hosting Services - These online services are for mainframe programs and include CICS Services and VM/CMS Services.

Onsite Support - Support that provides hands-on technology support for agency workstation hardware and software.

Operational Metrics - These are the basic observations of operational events for each IT process area. They measure how well the IT organization is delivering their services on a day-to-day basis.

Owner - To have power over a resource; to determine how a resource is used, allocated, protected accessed, etc. An owner is responsible for establishing rules of appropriate use and protection. The state owns assets and resources purchased, acquired and used to deliver state services. Custodians are designated and assigned ownership duties such as access authorization, protection against unauthorized use and integrity verification.

Payroll System - Central Payroll System (CPS) produces agency payrolls based on assigned pay schedules for each pay period in the calendar year.  

Printer (Networked) - This is a provisioning of networked printers that can be shared with other computers on the network.

Printer (Standalone) - This is a provisioning of printers that connects directly to individual computers.

Procedure - The description of a formalized method of working (when and in what order actions are to be carried out) for a specified process or part thereof. Procedures provide for coordination between departments.

Process - A coherent sequence of activities that yield a result, product, or service; usually a continuous operation. A series of actions or operations designed to achieve an end.

Remote Support - Support that provides agencies with technology services that do not require hands-on support.

Risk - Within the context of IT operations, risk is the probability, not the certainty of suffering a loss and the vulnerability or likelihood that the threat will occur. The loss could be anything from diminished quality of a service to increased cost, missed deadlines, or complete service failure.  

Risk Management - Risk management is the process of identifying, analyzing, and addressing risks proactively. The goal of risk management is to clear the way for the positive impacts (opportunities) of an operations activity while minimizing the negative impacts (losses) associated with that risk.

Risk Planning - Anticipating risks and consequences that an organization cannot accept. The plan can include a way to reduce the likelihood that the risk will occur, and determine ways to reduce the impact should the risk occur.

Scope - A definition of what must be done to support the shared vision. It integrates the shared vision, mapped against reality, and reflects what the customer deems essential for success of the release. Negotiating the scope of a project balances customer needs and desires against technological and business constraints.

Server Hosting - This offering encompasses all the different types of applications (web, database, collaboration, etc) used by the agencies that need to physically be hosted on a server.

Service Improvement Project (SIP) - A process applied to a service with the goal of improving the effectiveness, efficiency, and maturity of the service.

Service Level - An agreed-upon quality and quantity of services to be supplied.

Service Level Agreement (SLA) - The SLA is an agreement between the IT service provider and the customer/user community. The SLA formalizes customer/user requirements for service levels and defines responsibilities of all participating parties. 

Standardization - The establishment of technical specifications for products, working methods, and similar components to achieve system uniformity.

Storage Management - It provides management of onsite and offsite data storage for the purposes of data restoration and historical archiving. It is the process of defining, tracking, and maintaining data and data resources in the production IT environment. It provides the storage requirements, monitors these requirements, and provides ongoing maintenance of the storage infrastructure.

Technology Support Services - Services that provide agency users with a single common point of contact to obtain assistance in the use of BCCS Infrastructure Services.

Telephone System - The Office Telephone System provides the required voice infrastructure to make and receive interoffice, local, and long distance telephone calls via the public telephone network and, in certain locations, through BCCS's voice Virtual Private Network.

Timekeeping System - Central Time and Attendance System (CTAS) is an on-line system that provides a comprehensive solution for recording and managing employee benefit time.

User File Storage - User File Storage provides a variety of storage types to most efficiently meet the data storage and retrieval needed to support application software running on the mainframe platform.

Video Conferencing - Video Conferencing services provide room-based video conferencing equipment and global support for scheduling and connection of point-to-point and multipoint video conferences upon request.

Voicemail System - This is an enterprise-wide voice messaging service, which includes standard voice messaging features, such as: message storage, send/receive messages, message reply and forward, personal and system distribution list access, and message waiting/outcall notification features.

WAN - Wired - Wired WAN access connects an agency office network to the state's WAN.

WAN - Wireless - Wireless WAN access connects an agency office network to the state's WAN via a wireless connection.

WAN Dial-Up - WAN Dial-Up access provides agency personnel with a single, globally consistent method to connect to BCCS networked resources and applications as well as Internet access, via a common dialer and phone book.

Web Conferencing - Web conferencing enables participants to perform real-time collaborative work using a standard personal computer.

Web Midrange Servers - These midrange servers can be used for hosting web applications created by the individual agencies. 

Webcast - Webcasting services enable the broadcast of corporation-sponsored, live video or pre-recorded presentations in both real-time and on-demand formats.
